Create a header that numbers all pages consecutively in the upper right-hand corner, one-half inch from the top and flush with the right margin. On the Indents and Spacing tab, under Indentation, select First line. Select Format, and then choose Paragraph. On the Home tab, right-click the Normal style, and choose Modify. MLA recommends that you use the “Tab” key as opposed to pushing the space bar five times. First-line indent by default Put the cursor anywhere in the paragraph. If your book is non-fiction, generally speaking, you want to use block paragraphs rather than indents, unless your book is a memoir or historical fiction. With fiction book formatting, you want to have just a small indent at the start of each paragraph. So a paragraph set in 12 point should have a first-line indent of 12–48 points. It should be no bigger than four times the point size, or else the first line will seem disconnected from the left edge. Typically, a first-line indent should be no smaller than the current point size, or else it’ll be hard to notice. This creates a line break or a soft return. Position the cursor where you want to create the hanging indent (at the end of the first line) and then press Shift + Enter or Shift + Return and then press Tab.
